Volvo will build a battery assembly plant in the United States by the end of 2021

According to Eurocar News, Volvo will build its own battery assembly plant in the United States to prepare for the launch of a series of electric vehicles in the market.

       The expansion is part of Volvo's previously announced $6 million project.The project has been launched at its Richville, South Carolina plant, which includes the construction of a second production line and Volvo Car University.

XC90 will use Volvo's next version of the scalable product architecture platform SPA2.Volvo did not disclose how many XC90s are battery-powered models.

A Volvo spokesperson said that the construction of the battery assembly plant will be completed before the end of 2021.In the factory, employees will assemble and test the lithium-ion battery packs that power the crossover.Volvo hopes to reduce costs by assembling battery packs in factories.

A Volvo spokesperson declined to disclose the planned capacity of the battery assembly plant or how many jobs it will create.Overall, the planned XC90 production line is expected to create approximately 1 jobs.

Electrification offensive

The XC90 will be Volvo's third battery-powered model.Its first car is an electric version of the popular XC40 compact crossover, which was launched in October last year.Volvo said that this electric car will enter the U.S. market in the fourth quarter of 10.
